Just in time for the holidays, free at-home coronavirus tests will become available on Monday to order at no charge, following an earlier announcement of plans to do so as cases of SARS-CoV-2 began to rise dramatically in the United States.
The government has made at-home test kits available periodically since the first ones were approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Earlier in the month, the Biden administration made $600 million available for the new program.
Free coronavirus test kits were last available from the government in early October – that is, until now.
The tests will be available at www.covidtests.gov and will be able to detect all current omicron subvariants.
The move comes in the wake of a significant rise in case numbers and hospitalizations. In addition, wastewater surveillance continues to indicate a major uptick in new cases.
