The Biden administration is once again making free at-home coronavirus tests available at no charge, effective this coming Monday. The government has made at-home test kits available periodically since the first ones were approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
The last day that U.S. citizens were able to order free coronavirus test kits from the government was be September 2, 2022 – that is, until now.
The tests will be available at www.covidtests.gov and will be able to detect all current omicron subvariants.
The move comes in the wake of a significant rise in case numbers and hospitalizations. In addition, wastewater surveillance indicates that the actual number of cases of SARS-CoV-2 has surpassed that of the first wave and is approaching that of the Delta variant wave.
The free program ended last year, the Biden administration said, “because Congress hasn’t provided additional funding to replenish the nation’s stockpile of tests,” according to the official government coronavirus test website.
