A class-action lawsuit filed Tuesday accuses Delta Air Lines of “grossly misrepresenting” its environmental impact and using faulty methods to back its claims of carbon neutrality. The suit takes aim at carbon offsetting, a widely used tool for attempting to mitigate the effects of travel emissions.
According to sustainability experts, carbon offsetting programs often don’t work as advertised and consumers, including businesses, should view environmental claims with skepticism — regardless of the underlying strategies.
