An old concept to build a new audience
Building an audience is a superpower.
What separates creators who thrive from creators who’re dead-broke is the fact that they have an audience (and know how to monetize it.)
The problem is that most creators don’t know how to build an audience the right way.
They spend endless hours doom scrolling on social media and wonder why nothing works.
But if you’re willing to take the time to ruthlessly apply the simple psychological principle I’m going to share with you today, everything will become way easier. Guaranteed.
Attracting the 0.000002326%
You don’t need millions of eyeballs to make a living.
In fact, you only need 1000 true fans. And when you think about it, that’s only 0.000002326% of the world’s global population.
In a world where you can reach anybody in just a few seconds, that’s not hard to achieve when you know exactly what to focus on.
Yet, I see it all the time: people don’t want to build businesses. They only want to be famous and collect vanity trophies.
But as a creator, you need to make a choice. Do you want to attract 1,000 true fans or 1,000,000 random Joes?
I choose the 0.000002326% option any day.
My Chicagoan grandpa
I love learning from grandpas.
The reason is simple: Grandpas know way more about life than an Instagram influencer. The more I can learn from Grandpas, the more I’ll download experiences and valuable life lessons into my brain. The smarter I become (hopefully!)
And the grandpa I’m going to talk about today is called Leo Brunett. You probably never heard about him. But he was one of the ad geniuses of the past century. Grandpas like him built the whole modern marketing world we live in today. So he can teach us one or two things about audience building.
But before sharing his valuable lesson, there’s an elephant in the room we need to talk about.
Your most important asset is not your audience
Most creators swear by their audiences.
And that’s only half the truth. Do you know why? Simply because it’s not just about the audience. It’s about the relationship you have with the audience. In other words, it’s all about trust and confidence.
Nothing else matters.
You could pop up in front of millions of people. If they believe you’re a scammer, they’ll never engage –not to say buy– from you.
Doing biz with the man across the street
So now that you know that’s all about confidence and trust… Let’s see what grandpa Leo said about it.
“… the №1 factor in building confidence is the plain old-fashioned matter of friendly familiarity.
You simply can’t have one without the other…
When you meet a man on the same street corner every morning and learn to like the way he smiles, the way he dresses, and the way he conducts himself you are much more likely to be a prospect for the automobile or the insurance policy he may sometime want to sell you than you are for that of a stranger.”
Here’s the trick: You can build confidence by simply being familiar withsomebody. This is called the Friendly Familiarity Effect.
In short, when you master being consistent, you can easily win the game. Even if you’re not the best at your craft. Even if you’re making typos. Even if your work is imperfect.
Your only focus should be showing up daily in front of your target audience, like the man across the street.
The medium doesn’t matter as long as you show up consistently.
The more you do this, the more people will become familiar with your name, content, and style.
Consistency builds trust.
Being a consistent creator is what separates the amateurs from the pros. It requires setting up the right systems to be able to create content in a quick and easy way.
So the real question is not really about how to build an audience…But how to create content in a consistent way to trigger the Friendly Familiarity Effect.
One of the ways I create content faster, is by using a second brain. In short, it helps me store my best ideas and come up with articles like the one you just read.
