United Airlines announced it will purchase 100 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft with an option to purchase an additional 100.
The Chicago-based carrier termed the move “the largest widebody order by a U.S. carrier in commercial aviation history.”
In a statement, the airline said it expects to take delivery of the new Dreamliners between 2024 and 2032. The purchase agreement allows for it to select between the 787-8, 9 or 10 models, which the airline said would give it wide flexibility for a variety of routes.
The purchase will accelerate “our plan to connect more people to more places around the globe and deliver the best experience in the sky,” the airline’s CEO, Scott Kirby said.
The new airplanes will replace older Boeing 767 and Boeing 777 aircraft. United said it will have removed all 767 aircraft from its fleet by 2030.
